Elmo Shirt Tutorial

Our friend’s son Ethan turned 2 last month, when I got the Elmo themed invitation, I just knew it was going to lead to some fun craft projects!Elmo-Theme-2nd-Birthday-Gift

Elmo Card – Made with the Sesame Street Cricut Cartridge

Little Tikes Tap-a-tune Drum

Andrew&Ethan-DrummingWe of course had to introduce Ethan to drumming since Andrew is a drummer, it was a total hit with all the little ones at the party.  I jazzed it up by adding his name in Cricut letters.

When Ethan opened the present the shirt was folded on top of the drum, he totally said “Elmo” and gave him a hug. Too cute! It was really easy to make too!

Materials:
Steps:

1. Starch and iron your fabric, to get it stiffer and easier to work with.

2. Prep your fabric for pattern cutting, cut rough sizes for each shape, then iron on the Heat n Bond.

3. If using your Cricut, remove backing paper and stick to your matt, then blue tape the edges for extra hold. (Get your matt extra sticky again by using Zig Two Way Glue, cutting fabric well is all about grip and a fresh blade). Cut using your cricut on medium speed with a deep cut depth. (Don’t be surprised if it messes up the smile lines).

4. If not using a cricut trace the pattern pieces onto the baking paper and cut out carefully. (Note on the mouth shape skip the smile lines they are do skinny to work out well).

5.Position the face as you want him, and iron on through a piece of muslin (so the pieces don’t move around on you). At this point if you used Ultra Hold you’re done.

6.  Carefully stitch along the edges, the key is slow and lots of stopping and adjusting.

7. If you have a monogram font on your machine I like to add my initials onto the tag =)

I also added the big E to the back in the Sesame Street font to the back using the same method.

This post is partying here.

    1. While the cricut does make it easier, you don't have to have one, I made the pattern printable for tracing too =)

  7. So wish I would have seen this post about 7 months ago! My daughters second birthday was elmo party and i wanted to wear a shirt that matched the theme but wasn't going to pay a bunch for one. I also made my daughter a shirt and used, well I should say tried to use, my cricut to cut the fabric but the tutorial i looked at didn't have you tape it down which I think would help a lot!

    1. oh dear, yeah finding the magic Cricut fabric combo is tough, using a dedicated fabric blade also helps a ton! I've also had good luck with fabric stiffener, it stiffens stuff up more than the starch, both Aleene's and Plaid make it.
