Quailman Costume from Doug

Quailman-Doug-Costume-Tutorial-004Do you remember the Nickelodeon cartoon Doug? Do you remember his imaginary super hero self, Quailman?

One of our friends had a “Super Hero” themed birthday party, so I helped one of my BFF’s Kelsey make her costume. I went as Edna from the Incredibles since I made her costume.
I was working on this pretty quickly before the party, so I don’t have step by step photos, nothing was too complicated though.

We swapped out Porkchop for Quail-Squirrel, since the Alpha Gamma Delta mascot is a squirrel. Quail squirrel was outfitted with a red jersey scrap “Q” and a scrap cape fastened with a red ribbon.

We decided that a leather belt would be to heavy and uncomfortable to wear all evening so I whipped up a belt using 2 small d-rings and some webbing. I sewed the d-rings on first, then had Kelsey try it on, once we had the size right, I doubled over the excess webbing and sewed a pipe cleaner folded in half sandwiched between the two layers. To make it stand up I folded it up and tack stitched it so it would stay upright.

The cape was easy, it is 1 yard of bright red cotton, I folded over 1 of the short edges and sewed a casing, then using a safety pin I fished some red ribbon through the casing.

The shirt is just a green men’s tee-shirt. To add the “Q” I traced a “Q” onto some Heat n Bond Ultra Hold (Don’t forget to trace your Q backwards like I did!) After tracing the Q I ironed it to some scrap red jersey fabric. then carefully cut out the “Q” along my traced lines. Then you can iron the “Q” directly onto the shirt. (Since I forgot to mirror my “Q” I ended up tack stitching the Q to the shirt since we liked the shiny texture, and that way Kelsey can reuse the shirt in a future costume.
Other costume elements that were purchased were: khaki shorts, men’s tidy whiteys, and brown sneakers.
