I totally had no real plan for this project, and it turned out wonderful! Lucky duck!
 

This full size federal style headboard was something A’s Mom found when clearing out his Grandfather’s shed, I spotted it over a year ago, and pointed out that while it’s finish was pretty much gone it’d look super cute painted if we ever had the space. A few weekends ago I finally got it out of their house and into mine and got to work.

Still have to nab a finial from the footboard to replace the one a creature nibbled on.  

Prep:

There was no lacquer on this piece so I literally wiped the dust/dirt off it, and roughed a few spots up with some 320 sandpaper.

Materials:

• Can of Rustoleum Ultra Cover in Flat Black (I could get away with flat on a headboard, but go satin on a piece that gets handled)
• Foam Brushes
• Foam Roller
• Stiff small paint brush
• Some Sandpaper

Steps:

1. Paint with two coats using the brushes and rollers.

2. Sand the edges slowly to reveal the wood. Go slowly to make sure you’re not taking too much or making it uneven. The round flat surfaces were really hard, and just roughed up the shine of the paint, but with the bed and pillows no one will ever be close enough to notice it.

3.  Stop before you think you should, and wipe it down with tac cloth.

4. Marvel at how awesome and easy it was.

Here’s what it looks like in our guestroom with a Queen sized mattress (the headboard is a full size)

It goes perfectly with the black/brown Ikea Malm Dresser! I really love how just the two layer of paint let the wood grain show through!
